2009 Rabies Campaign
Duration: 09/01/2009, 12:00am to 09/30/2009, 11:59pm

In support of World Rabies Day, September 28, 2009, Veterinarians without Borders / Vétérinaires sans Frontières – Canada (VWB/VSF) is holding its second annual month-long Rabies Campaign (September 1 – 30) to increase awareness about the global rabies issue and to raise funds for our international rabies prevention programs. While rabies is not something that most Canadians think about very often, it continues to be a daily concern for people living in other parts of the world where the disease kills nearly 150 people every single day. Sadly, over 55,000 people die annually – mostly children in Africa and Asia – from a disease we know how to prevent. Yet with effective programming, community education and community involvement, the global rabies problem is solvable. To date, VWB/VSF has raised and dispersed over $100,000 towards rabies prevention projects around the world, including projects in Guatemala, Cambodia, Nepal, Malawi and Northern Canada. But there is still a lot of work to be done! Visit the Veterinarians without Borders website at www.vwb-vsf.ca to see how you can support this fundraising campaign!

Dogs and cats sterilization
Duration: 09/28/2009, 9:00am to 10/02/2009, 3:00pm

The Ministry of Health in Mexico now is performing the celebration of World Rabies Day for third sequent year, through 32 State Health Services (SESA). This event starts with a national main ceremony to be held in Oaxaca City on September 28th which will be presided by federal and state authorities, with participation of local health personnel and members of civil society organizations. As in previous years, we have an official poster with an allusive slogan, which is: Get a better coexistence with your dogs and cats, you can help in controlling them. Sterilize them! In each of 32 State Health Services (SESA), the main event has double sided activities: the first one is a local academic forum with a principal topic: Dogs and cats sterilization importance. Through this forum the attendants will be able to transmit this information to other members of their localities. So that, professors and students from veterinarian medicine schools are convened from each state, as well as health personnel, and members of state authorities and social organizations involved in rabies control. The second activity is to bring to dogs and cats´ owners a free sterilization procedure for their pets, through field operation groups, composed by veterinarian and local surgeons. It is important to mention that a key ring will be delivered to each owner as a symbolic acknowledgement for having taken their pets to be sterilized. It is important to highlight in a special way that such key rings were acquired with the funds Mexico obtained as winner of the 2008 World Rabies Day Latin America-Caribbean Award.

This event is hosted by the Student Epidemic Intelligence Society & the Global Health Concentration at The University of Texas School of Public Health, located within the Texas Medical Center. This event consists of a series of talks, followed by a welcome reception. Speakers include 4 students who worked in Bohol, the Philippines during July 2009, assisting with an assessment of the Bohol Rabies Prevention & Eradication Campaign, a project sponsored by Alliance for Rabies Control. They will report on the global rabies situation, history of rabies in the Philippines, the Bohol intervention program, and findings of the assessment project. SCAVMA also provides scholarships to students, recruits guest lecturers, and promotes animal welfare through its Animal Welfare Committee. This year the Dog Days Run is also partering with the One Health Initiative, a movement to forge co-equal, all inclusive collaborations between physicians, veterinarians, and other scientific health related disciplines. The One Health concept is a worldwide strategy for expanding interdisciplinary collaborations and communications in all aspects of health care for humans and animals. Through our partnership with the One Health Initiative and community organizations such as Alachua County Environmental Protection, the Dog Days Run will also be a promotional event for the importance of public health awareness.
