CHINA
In China, organizations are focusing mainly on education. Two organizations in Anhui province aim to reach 200-300 school children in various primary schools across Hefei city. They will also be distributing 3,000 leaflets in an accompanying 'roadshow'. In Beijing, another organisation (Animal Rescue Beijing) has secured over 100 schools and 200 volunteers to deliver the presentations and distribute materials. The intent is to make this a long-term program with the first round from 8 September to 4 October. In Shanghai, member society Second Chance Animal Aid plans to distribute materials in over 130 schools and target other media routes, as well as having some events. The China Companion Animal Protection Network also hopes to encourage members (over 30) to run primary school classes. The Educational Group for Protection of Environment and Animals (EGPEA), and AHANM aim to teach 10-12 year old pupils to understand what rabies is and how to prevent it, and how to avoid dog bites. They will reach 200-300 pupils aged 10 to 12 years old in 5 primary schools in Hefei City. The lessons will last 30 to 45 minutes and include talking, discussion role playing and a World Rabies Day quiz. They will use the feedback activities to assess the effectiveness of the project. Animal Rescue Beijing (ARB) is planning a long-term program with the first round from 8 September to 4 October. ARB is working with organizations of 16 universities in Beijing for the campaign on the campus and the recruitment of volunteer teachers for the middle and elementary schools. They will have about 100 student volunteers who will be trained after they come back from the summer vacation. The staff in the education bureau and the schools will start work on 27 August. Also they have some pet owners volunteering to do roadshows and leaflet delivery in their communities. Many adult Chinese also need education of rabies. Over 100 schools and over 200 volunteers have been secured. Large quantities of leaflets and posters will be printed. Second Chance Animal Aid (SCAA) intends to distribute a bilingual brochures in over 130 local schools (that's about 5,000 or more brochures, and they go home to parents). SCAA web site and local media and blogs. Any printed material to local vets, pet stores, markets, etc. Written materials up on "chu" windows (every local community has a centre where they put up notices- local communities would appreciate this kind of educational information). The Veterinary Colleges in India will conduct a variety of activities in observance of World Rabies Day including: student marathons, half-day rabies seminars, rabies vaccination campaigns, and awareness campaigns through print and electronic media. At least five large, road-side hoardings throughout the city are to be used for information on avoiding dog bites, how to treat wounds, information on ABC measures in the city, and the law regarding street dogs. A cycle rickshaw trolley with rabies education display will tour the kucchi bustis slum areas and distribute leaflets. The Jaipur Municipal Corporation CEO will flag off the event on WRD. Dr. Minerva Vinluan, Rabies Program Coordinator of the Department of Health (DOH), announced a new campaign against rabies. She explained that this new anti-rabies advocacy approach, dubbed as "Swim for Rabies-Free Philippines", aims to capture the middle and upper class sectors and other groups by involving elementary and high school students through sports such as swimming. This is being conducted in cooperation with Rabies Free World and Swim Com Renaissance Foundation. Events to date took place on February 3 2007 in Ultra in Pasig City with approximately 150 students from National Capital Region (NCR) and on March 3, 2007 at Olivares Sports Complex, Quezon City with about 200 students from National Capital Region (NCR). The Department of Health is planning to hold at least 10 more swimming competitions in Mindanao, Visayas and Luzon in time for the September 8 World Rabies Day.

On September 4-6, 2007, the Asian Rabies Expert Bureau (AREB) will meet in Bangkok and organize a press conference (September 7) to raise awareness, present the conclusions of their meeting, and announce their support to the World Rabies Day. AREB Members will describe the activities conducted by their countries in observance or the World Rabies Day. The Asian Rabies Expert Bureau is an informal group of experts in rabies, including members of nine Asian countries: Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Viet Nam.
