GERMANY
The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute (FLI), WHO CC for Rabies Surveillance and Research, will recognize World Rabies Day by educating veterinary and medical students on rabies to support the "one medicine approach". For this purpose a symposium will be organized in November this year in collaboration with the School of Veterinary Medicine and the WHO CC for Public Health of the University of Hannover. Recently, the FLI has issued a specific website entitled "World Rabies Day - supported by FLI". For more information, please see the FLI website (http://www.fli.bund.de/). The Rabies Bulletin Europe has supported the WRD right from the beginning by miscellaneous articles and ongoing announcements via the internet (http://www.rbe.fli.bund.de/Service/Meetings.aspx). The Institute of Public Health in Ljubljana will recognize World Rabies Day by focusing specifically on educating international travelers and other visitors interested in rabies. A need for pre-exposure treatment of travelers will be stressed especially before traveling to some highly endemic regions of rabies in the world. In last decade, with growing tourism, the incidence of post-exposure treatment of travelers has increased. Pre-exposure vaccination has also increased. The program will inform travelers about local treatment of the wounds and needs for rabies treatment after bite of animals as well. Details of activities will be announced by local media. Edinburgh
A Race Against Rabies is taking place in Edinburgh, UK on Saturday 22nd September at 12pm. This 5.5 km fun-run will take place in Holyrood Park around Arthur’s Seat, a hill in the centre of Edinburgh. The distance of 5.5km represents one metre for every 10 people who die from Rabies each year. The event is being organised by the Alliance for Rabies Control (ARC), together with students from the University of Edinburgh College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Everyone is welcome to take part, including residents of Edinburgh, visitors, students and children. The course is suitable for participants in wheelchairs. Dog-owners and their pets (on leads) are particularly welcome. Spectators and supporters are very welcome.

Any profits from the Edinburgh Race Against Rabies will be donated to the Alliance for Rabies Control and used in the fight against rabies, focussing on Africa and Asia.
Manchester, UKOn September 8, 2007, science historians from the Universities of Manchester and Birmingham are recreating scenes from 1880s Bradford when six children aged six to 15 were sent to Paris for treatment after being bitten by rabid dogs. It will take place at the Thackray Museum in Leeds. The event, which ends with all six children being successfully treated, will be re-staged in Manchester in October as part of Manchester Science Week.
